The Band Toto Asia

Toto expanded its production facilities abroad, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. North America was seen as an opportunity to grow for toilets and bidet seats, as opposed its "base" markets in Japan and China.

Dhaniram Toto was recording Toto words to ensure that the next generation could comprehend them. Many words were replaced by foreign words. For example, dui, which is Bengali for verandah, was being used.

Origins

The early history of Toto which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's economic expansion. In the beginning, Toto manufactured goods to meet the demand for modern, new urban housing. To accomplish this, it employed the country's first tunnel kiln to make ceramics in continuous flow. It also pioneered automation to allow production control, allowing greater efficiency and a more consistent production.

The company began expanding overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to profit from new markets and sales opportunities. It created the Cera Trading Company, importing and marketing other manufacturers' products to complement its own range of plumbing fittings and sanitary earthenware. This strategy helped increase sales and increased the company's market share.

In the 1990s, Toto began to concentrate on research and development of water-related appliances. It also improved its distribution system to better meet the needs of customers and increase profits. The company also employed the just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a greater level of customer satisfaction.

Discography

With a name like Asia you'd expect the group to be prog kings and queens however, it's actually a pretty straight forward rock band. The group was formed as four-piece, and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. However, even though the group have a variety of musical backgrounds their biggest breakthrough was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album was a huge blockbuster, but not without problems. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release an album that was a success or they would rescind the album. Luckily for Toto they delivered, with the aid of the smash single "Africa."

Toto's musical mastery is a result of their prior experience. Before forming the group, members were session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. This album starts off hard, with songs such as Running Out of Time and Unknown Soldier showcasing the bands ability to write great AOR songs that slowly work their hooks into you. The album also has some slower, more jazzy tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. The album closes with Great Expectations. This song blends folk and the distorted AOR that could sound completely wrong but actually is very effective.

After Toto IV, the band's fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left the band to pursue a solo career, and the band was dominated by drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the group in the wake of drug charges and the band continued as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.

Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. The group managed to release a chart-topping album, Kingdom of Desire, in 1992. The album was the last of Toto's lineup and the debut of Simon Phillips, a new singer.
